Norman Leathers

Norman's new directions in oil painting, are geometric designs originally inspired by quilt patterns of the past sewn by his grandmother, mother and aunts who came to Vermont and Massachusetts in the United States from the Province of Quebec in Canada. These women also engaged in braiding and hooking rugs, keeping Mr. Leathers surrounded in color, fabric and the banter of design objectives.
These new original designs are expanded to more complex geometric patterns beyond what a piece quilter in the past would have mastered given the complexity of design and selection of fabrics and colors available.
This Geokinetic work leads to an exploration of colors and patterns, changing the perception to the viewer when looking at an identical design. The aim is to effect depth or movement or both. Each design maintains its unique title but a different opus number. The clear warm colors of the impressionist movement predominate in most of the work with smaller designs within each geometric shape to add or diminish the tone of the base color.
Born in Worcester, Massachusetts, BA Degree Commercial Art, University of Miami, Coral Gables, Florida. For a number of years Mr. Leathers worked with architects and interior design professionals as a representative for Knoll International and also engaged in residential restorations. Now residing in the Coconut Grove area of Miami, Florida.
