"My life changing experience brought me to the Art of painting on Silk. From 1966 to 1969 I was a United States Peace Corps Volunteer in the Luzon Mountains of the Philippines. Here I developed my strong interest in orchids and orchid collecting. Upon finishing my Peace Corps program I went to Java and apprenticed under Indonesia Batik Master Bambang Oetoro. This experiance has proven to be the major influence in my life and work.
Upon returning to The United States I opened a Silk Painting studio in New York City and worked with two exceptional silk artist. As a working studio each of our works grew expeditiously and very soon our paintings sold at galleries and museum gift shops throughout the Americas. . Today I specialize in large floral paintings, fine art hand painted silk scarves and now printed fine silk scarves.
My studio is located in Sarasota Florida and my silk paintings and scarf collections are exhibited internationally. My studio at 2737 Hyde Park Street, Sarasota, Florida is open to the public for studio visits. Please call for appointments, 941-284-7277 or email me at jamie@kirkellsilks.com".
