My interest in photography began at an early age. My father was a photographer and as a child, I would hang out with him in his home darkroom watching as he developed film and made prints. Following in his footsteps, I love taking pictures. By 16, I was attending workshops offered by the local photography studio and was a photographer for my high school yearbook staff. I furthered my formal education in photography taking classes while in college and later, studying Professional Photography through The New York Institute of Photography.
I grew up in Hot Springs, Arkansas, hiking, canoeing, hunting and fishing in the Zigzag Range of the Ouachita Mountains. I developed a deep appreciation and respect for the environment and wildlife and, as a result, I chose to pursue a career outdoors and received a degree in Wildlife Conservation from Louisiana Tech University.
My wife and I moved to Beaufort, South Carolina in 1983 and we immediately fell in love with the area. With the Lowcountry's abundant wildlife and breathtaking scenery providing endless inspiration, my interest in photography has grown to include my other passions: nature, wildlife and the outdoors.
My dream of a career in photography became reality in 2014. In January of that year, I officially started David M. Shipper Photography and began showing my work in landscape and wildlife photography at Thibault Gallery in downtown Beaufort. Currently, in addition to showing my work in Beaufort, I travel the southeast attending juried art shows from Delray Beach, Florida to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. I also offer portrait photography, event photography, photography instruction and professional digital photo printing.
